Urban Institute for Teacher Education
The mission of UITE is to prepare educators to serve students from all backgrounds while celebrating every educational community’s unique strengths, viewpoints, and values. Our goal is an educational process in which teachers, leaders, and teacher educators draw upon multidisciplinary research and direct community-based inquiry to meet the needs of all students.
Elementary K-6
Bachelor's of Science (B.S.) or (B.A.)
Elementary Teacher Education
This program prepares graduates to teach grades K-6. This is part of a K-8 licensure recommendation to the Utah State Board of Education. Those who complete endorsement requirements can teach in K-8 classrooms. This is an interdisciplinary bachelor's program. Students may choose to complete a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Master's of Education (M.Ed.) with License
Educational Psychology
This program prepares graduates to work with students across all ages, abilities, cultures, and linguistic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Students will work with the Department of Educational Psychology (EDPS) and the Urban Institute for Teacher Education (UITE) to complete this program.

M.Ed. with License
Special Education
This program prepares graduates to work with students across all ages, abilities, cultures, and linguistic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Students will work with the Department of Special Education (SPED) and the Urban Institute for Teacher Education (UITE) to complete this program.

Secondary Teaching
Bachelor's with License
Undergraduate Secondary Programs
This program prepares junior high, middle school, and high school educators. Good secondary teaching requires in-depth knowledge of the subject matter. The best secondary educators know how to apply educational concepts and principles to their teaching.
Secondary Education at the U of U is not a major or minor.
Candidates must major and/or minor in the areas they wish to teach. They can take licensure classes along with their bachelor’s degree or upon completing a bachelor’s degree. The program includes licensure courses focused on pedagogical skills.
Dual B.S./M.Ed. with License
Educational Psychology STEM
This program prepares students to teach science in middle and high schools. It uses rigorous training to push students to achieve the qualifications necessary. It combines a BS, MEd, and State of Utah Teaching License. This paves the way for students to become licensed secondary teachers in only 5 years.
It is ideal for students pursuing teaching bachelor's degrees in these scientific fields:

- Physics
- Earth Science
M.Ed. with License
Educational Leadership & Policy (ELP)
This program is a combination of two others:
- Secondary Licensure from UITE
- MEd from ELP
Its mission is to develop teacher leaders who can enact positive change. What are the three goals that make this change possible? Improve student achievement. Bridge the achievement gap. Foster democratic and just school communities. Students will gain a conceptual and practical understanding of instructional leadership.
M.Ed. with License
Education, Culture, & Society (ECS)
This program is a combination of two others:
- Secondary Licensure from UITE
- MEd from ECS
Its mission is to prepare teachers to work in the increasingly diverse Salt Lake region. Students will learn practical and conceptual frameworks they can use in the classroom. These frameworks help to create equitable and challenging academic spaces.
Some of the main areas of focus:
- Family and community partnerships
- The meaning and art of teaching and learning in urban contexts
- Linguistically varied classrooms and communities
Master's of Arts (M.A.) with License
World Languages
This program is a combination of two others:
- Secondary Licensure from UITE
- MA in World Languages degree from the Department of Languages & Literature
It seeks to ensure graduates are masters of the language and the pedagogy. The goal is to produce public school teachers who can teach in one or two foreign languages, or in one foreign language and another secondary subject.
Early Childhood Elementary K-3

Human Development & Family Studies
This program is a combination of two others:
- K-3 Licensure from UITE
- Interdisciplinary BA or BS from the College of Social & Behavioral Science
Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) focuses on human growth and development across the lifespan. It brings in knowledge from psychology, sociology, economics, and biology. The goal is to provide a full understanding of human behavior and family dynamics. This understanding includes cultural and societal factors. Students will have both in-classroom and real-world opportunities to learn.
