University of Utah Reading Clinic, Salt Lake City Public Library Launch Youth Literacy Project
The University of Utah's Reading Clinic and the Salt Lake City Public Library have launched the Youth Literacy Project, a new pilot that brings research-based reading support into Salt Lake City communities.
The project trains community volunteers to provide structured literacy tutoring to elementary students. The University of Utah Reading Clinic, housed in the College of Education, provides volunteer training and ongoing support.
By placing tutoring in public libraries, the partnership brings reading support into neighborhood spaces already used by children and families. The pilot will run through November and explore how trained community volunteers can help expand access to literacy support.
Established by the Utah Legislature in 1999, the University of Utah Reading Clinic provides assessment and intervention services for developing readers and professional development for educators. The clinic works to connect current reading research with practical instruction for students, families and educators across Utah.
The Youth Literacy Project builds on that mission by pairing the clinic’s literacy expertise with the Salt Lake City Public Library’s community reach. It also gives local volunteers an opportunity to support young readers while strengthening connections among the University, libraries and the communities they serve.
